Does it make any sense to be good at essays and reviews but not at writing an actual story?

Maybe you just need more practice writing stories. As everyone else has mentioned, they are a different kind of animal from a review. Write a story, hash it out, get someone else to give you a really critical ysis, and come back to it. Keep working working, writing more stories. Don't worry about failing, just keep writing.
